Tofs, in house contributor at safespace discusses the ‘Chidinma’ incident and shares her thoughts on self esteem, peer pressure and patience.

Some days ago, we heard about Chidinma from Unilag who killed her Sugar daddy in Lagos. I read somewhere that she said he tried to rape her and then she stabbed him. But one thing I’ve consistently read is that after they couldn’t find her for a while because she was always wearing nose masks and that she changed her hairstyle! Which makes me think that it was very well thought of.

But I’m not here to tell you about whether or not I think she is guilty. I’d let the court investigate and then decide that. Chances are that she is though. And that’s exactly where the problem is. Why did she do it? Self Esteem Issues? Desperation? Peer pressure? Greed? In her head, she had her reasons.

She might have started as desperate “I just need to sort out school bills, my family is struggling” or it might have been “My friend is using the latest iPhone, God when”. It might even have been “I want to change my phone, it’s outdated and I want to buy bone straight”.

It started with her thoughts. It can’t be that bad. Many people are doing it. If many people are doing it, it shouldn’t be a big deal. Whatever it was, her current situation has proven that it was not worth it. It never really is when the consequences come to play. I agree that life is short and we should enjoy the little pleasures of this world. Like you, I want to have money and have the best things in life but I want to get this things in the right way. I don’t want to destroy my old age just so I can enjoy for a few years in my youth. Life is a process, take it slow. Don’t put yourself under unnecessary pressure. If you have worked for it and it has not come then it is not time or you’re missing something. Don’t beat yourself up. You’re young and God willing, you have time! Don’t rush it. You’ll do great. Just keep working, doing the right things. God sees you! And he’ll reward you. Take your time. Do not despise the days of your humble beginnings. Your time will come.
