So it’s already a couple of days into 2022 and as usual we’ll be waiting patiently for this really looong January to end. It’s hard to imagine that it was last year we launched Safe Space. In fact the 1st of January was our one year anniversary and it felt amazing celebrating the growth of Safe Space in the past one year.

Throughout the year 2021, we shared amazingly heartfelt letters written by some amazing people who were willing to share their stories, pains and victories, insecurities and strengths with us. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and review our top letters from 2021.

“Blood sucking twenties: Yay or Nay” definitely had everyone talking. I think this was because we could all relate to how adulting was kicking us up and the questions and decisions that characterise being in your twenties.

Next up is “You win some, you lose some”. That letter was definitely a bang. In as much as we are tired of motivational speeches, this one was definitely uplifting, showing us that failing doesn’t mean it’s over. The writer shared some hard truths that forced us to see things we regard as failure in another light.

With “Insecure? This is SafeSpace” we got humour and facts, it’s the way the writer attacked us for me. I could practically hear him calling my name in my ex’s voice, “Adamu, regardless of how much you lie to yourself, you are still broke and inadequate” why did he have to come at us like that? I know I’m broke please leave me abeg.

“Stay at home daughter” is on another level of relatable especially to first daughters. I mean every first daughter can relate in one way or the other.

The fifth twenties letter got me questioning myself and my future relationships, it gives a view on the pressure of marriage and the engagements showed that people also questioned themselves about their relationship with both friends and family. I mean some of us want to get married but is it for ourselves or for what people will say.

For the 10th SafeSpace letter, it’s the perfect answer for you guys that have been asking me why I don’t use or like social media, go and read it. A lot of people definitely agreed to the toxicity of social media especially that bird app.

“Naija Parents” was a classic. Who doesn’t have parents with those dramatic features? If you don’t, please come and tell me how you are doing (don’t ask me which features, go and read it my friend).

LMAO, the 19th letter was hilarious but I couldn’t relate to the first millions because I’m still broke and some of us are broke but when we see million, we are always curious as to the how them dey run am so I definitely recommend this letter. It was worth reading.

I can keep going but let me stop here. Each letter is special because it’s your story that we’re sharing and it’s a privilege to do so. Knowing that someone somewhere finds comfort, community, laughter and acceptance from sharing these stories is enough motivation to keep doing this. Thank you!
